The Man Who Drew Tintin

I took a trip to Paris on 9 February to see the Tintin Exhibition at the Pompidou Centre. Herge, (Georges Remi, initials reversed and pronounced in French) was born a hundred years ago in Brussels. After looking at the travel time required I decided to go by train: staying in London overnight (the costly part) and then using Eurostar from Waterloo .... but it meant an early start. I was back in Halifax before midnight.

Herge's comic strips began in 1929 and remain hugely popular worldwide, with all 22 books continuously in print and several modern books about the artist and his creation available. Tintin was made into a successful TV cartoon series. The stories range across most of the world's continents. Although they had to be updated after the war to remove some colonial attitudes and characterisations, they are overall both highly popular and very funny. And Herge helped to introduce much of the world's variety and interest to his readers.
