Malta Residential 17-24 November 2004

Each year a group of between 30 and 60 students who are studying Tourism Management at Leeds Metropolitan University make a 7-day visit to Malta. This section has a selection of images from the visit. In recent years they have been joined by a small group of students who are studying tourism at Laurea Polytechnic, Helsinki.

The Dockyard has been a major feature of Malta life and economy for many decades. The islands were always strategically important to Eurasian politics because of the quality of the sheltered harbour and growing docks with a highly skilled workforce. Now in decline, the changes to the Maltese economy as the dockyards are restructured are being carried out against the background of Malta's joining the European Community on 1 May, 2004.

Early in every visit by Leeds students there come guided tours of Valletta led by students from the Institute of Tourism Studies in Malta. Vincent Zammitt, of the Institute, is here marshalling his student guides and the UK and Finnish visitors, stood in the shade of City Gate, Valletta.
